Family Literacy Night was held at New Garden last week and was a huge success. It was a fun way to discover ways to support children as they learn to read and write. Some of the stations included such topics as phonological awareness, decoding strategies and word building. A team of New Garden teachers, Mrs. Davidson, Ms. Lopez, Mrs. Riblett, Mr. Harris, Mrs. Griffith and Dr. O’Loughlin, all worked together to teach and reinforce new learning strategies. Each child also received free books to enjoy at home.

New Garden Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

New Garden Elementary School celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month, which occurred from September 15th to October 15th. According to some research done by some enthusiastic fifth graders, the observation of Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15.

Every grade level at New Garden, either decorated their classroom door or a section of the hallway, with something then gleaned from research about this special topic. Books were read and grade levels collaborated together to complete relevant projects. As you peruse the creativity below, you will see there was much learning and discovery going on at New Garden.

A Message from Our Principal, Ms. Elizabeth Weaver

A Message from Ms. Weaver

Dear Fabulous New Garden Families,

It is hard to believe that October is already here! It seems like we just started school and welcomed everyone back to a new year. I hope that this note finds you and your child doing well and that the beginning of the year has been a positive and productive experience.

As always, we wish to express our sincere gratitude toward our entire school community. We would not be the amazing school that we are without the help and support of all of you.

Thank you and may you have a safe, healthy, and happy fall season!

Elizabeth Weaver

Recently two classes, Mrs. Melissa Ricketts and Mr. Troy Harris, partnered to become buddy classes for this school year. Once a month, these two classes will come together to complete a fun activity. On their initial meeting, Mr. Harris’s class helped Mrs. Rickett’s class learn how to log on to the computer and to a computer program called Reading Eggs. The first graders also read a book to the fifth graders. As the pictures show, it was a mutually beneficial time. The fifth graders had the chance to be excellent role models for the first graders. Another activity is planned for later this month. Both classes are bubbling over with excitement for this next activity.

Every Friday at New Garden, is Spirit Day, and everyone is encouraged to wear their New Garden gear or blue and white. The New Garden PTO also gave every new student a tee-shirt as well. Look at the smiling faces! It’s quite evident that New Garden is where minds are blooming! Many thanks to the PTO!
