New Garden Elementary School’s second grade students recently enjoyed a tour of the Winterthur Museum. They learned many interesting things as you can see from the pictures below. They have been studying life during the colonial times. The tour showed the children how the colonial people lived, what their homes were like, objects they used (looms, candle molds, kick toasters, foot warmers, butter churners and molds and sugar nipper). The students toured the rooms, solved riddles about different objects on display, sketched objects, listened to a story, and had a chance to dress up and play in the “Touch It” room.
New Garden Elementary School recently celebrated American Education Week. It was a week that included specific activities each day designed to energize the students and staff. On Monday, it was “Hats Off” to American Education Week as students wore their favorite hats. On Tuesday, students wore numbers to show the importance of math. On Wednesday, it was “Read Me Day” as students wore clothing with words on it and bought their favorite book to school. On Thursday, it was “Dress for Success” day as students came to school in their finest clothing. On Friday, it was “Spirit Day.” On this day, students and staff wore their New Garden colors, which are blue and white. It was a fun filled week.

New Garden Elementary School’s Battlebots is an engineering and robotics club for elementary students. It utilizes LEGO Mindstorms Robot Kits, allowing members to create and customize their very own robot. The club was started by Kennett High School/former New Garden Elementary School students James Burns, Braden Saathoff and Ryan Myers. The club focuses on STEM concepts, while also providing an entertaining and educational experience. After the students build their robots, they are pitted against each other in head-to-head duels, engaging teamwork and sportsmanship. It’s a chance to build your own creation and test it out in a way you’ve never done before.
