New Garden Elementary School proudly congratulates Mrs. Lily Santos for receiving a Kenny Award, presented to her by the Superintendent, Dr. Tomasetti. A Kenny Award is a special recognition given from one Kennett employee to another employee for any outstanding contribution to our school community. Mrs. Santos has worked for the Kennett Consolidated School District for 16 years. “Supporting students with all abilities and having them master the skills needed to overcome these challenges, gives me great joy!” said Mrs. Santos. She provides love, positive relationships and sets high expectations for all of the students she encounters. She loves working at New Garden and enjoys working with so many incredible teachers and support staff.
New Garden’s Book Fair: An Overwhelming Success
“The more you read, the more you know.”
Students always love going to the book fair, and to nurture this love, the New Garden Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) gave every student $5 towards any book. Every student had a great time choosing their book.
New Garden’s Most Anticipated Event: Breakfast With Buddy
One of the most anticipated events at New Garden Elementary School is “Breakfast with Buddy.” This event brings parents, guardians, and family members to the school to join students and Buddy the Bulldog for delicious donuts and refreshing water for the kids and hot Starbucks coffee for the adults. Everyone had a great time!
Family Literacy Night at New Garden
Recently, students in grades first through third joined their families to take part in Family Literacy Night at New Garden Elementary. Students eagerly came at 6:30 and were greeted by teachers as they began the night’s activities.
Our first graders made a sight word game with their family, practiced their decoding skills using an awesome book mark that reminds them to focus on the sounds they hear while reading and made a fun comprehension cube to use while they read at home.
Our second grade friends made a comprehension game with different levels of questions to use while they read, created a sight word sticker book to build automaticity while reading these words and played “Read and Roll” to ask questions while reading independently.
Our third grade friends learned all about how to ask questions before reading, during reading and after reading. Students were encouraged to tell and write their sentences while listening to a read aloud.
The night ended as students and their families came together to pick out their “just right book” to take home.
A special thanks to our teachers Mrs. Kimberly Hall, Mrs. Tessa Adair, Mrs. Elizabeth Metz, our translator, Ms. Kate Alba, to our Kennett High School volunteers and especially our principal, Mrs. Elizabeth Weaver for making the night a success!
Fifth Grade Visits Myrick Conservation Center
New Garden Elementary School’s fifth grade students recently visited the Myrick Conservation Center. Their visit was divided into two parts. For the first half, students were engaged in a variety of problem-solving experiences. These activities were designed to break down barriers, foster teamwork, and identify potential leadership among students. During the second half of their visit, the students took a sensory journey around a pond. During their journey, the students completed a pond study and learned how the inhabitants of the pond live and thrive in their community.
