New Garden Hosts Family Literacy Night
New Garden Elementary School students in grades first through fifth took part in the school’s Family Literacy Night, hosted by Title I. During the evening, students and their parents engaged in several comprehension and decoding activities. Teachers modeled the activities and shared strategies with parents with the goal of increasing reading at home. Teachers, students, and parents took this opportunity to talk about reading, practice important reading skills, and build a joy for life-long literacy. Toward the end of the night, students were able to take their activities home and pick out a “just right book” with their parent(s).
Family Literacy Night is an important night to our students and their families. At New Garden Elementary School we strive to meet the needs of all of our students and provide the best learning opportunities that we can. A special thanks to all the teachers, families, interpreters, and our Kennett High School volunteers for helping make this night a success for everyone!
Avondale Fire Department Visits New Garden
Avondale Fire Dept 23 visited New Garden Elementary School’s first grade to teach about fire safety during the students unit on Community Helpers and Fire Safety and Prevention. Students learned about calling 9-1-1 during an emergency, having safe spots and at least 2 exits to get out during a fire, and what firemen wear so they know who to look for in an emergency. The students also learned about the different fire trucks and ambulances, and were able to climb aboard each to get a look inside at the end of their visit with the firefighters and EMTs. New Garden Elementary School is thankful to have such amazing heroes and community helpers right down the road whenever we need them!
Ms. Skopowski’s Art Club
This year’s Art Club consists of third, fourth, and fifth grade students who have a passion for art and enjoy doing projects outside of the classroom. This fall they made paper-mâché pumpkins, clay leaf prints, and water-color spider webs. Club members are looking forward to helping decorate for this year’s book fair. The club has more than 50 members, which necessitates splitting the club into two groups for double the fun!
“Reading Around the World” Reading Incentive Program
Mrs. Kristi Pizzini recently launched the “Reading Around the World” (RATW) Reading Incentive Program. The program encourages students to read for 20 minutes each night and in return they will get prizes. This year’s goal is 1,000,000 minutes of reading outside of the school day. Posters will be placed in the library to track each class’s weekly minutes read. The winning classroom will have a banner to hang outside of its room. Some of the reading prizes include a superhero eraser, bookmark, comic book and a homework pass. There is only one word to describe the faces of the students as they listened to the details of this program…PRICELESS.
Fifth Grade Visits Myrick Conservation Center
New Garden Elementary School’s fifth grade students recently visited the Myrick Conservation Center. Their visit was divided into two parts. For the first half, students were engaged in a variety of problem-solving experiences. These activities were designed to break down barriers, foster teamwork, and identify potential leadership among students. During the second half of their visit, the students took a sensory journey around a pond. During their journey, the students completed a pond study and learned how the inhabitants of the pond live and thrive in their community.
Superhero Day at New Garden Elementary School
When there is a need, New Garden Elementary School always responds. Recently, teachers, staff, and students came to school dressed as superheros for a worthy cause. Everyday 11.5 children are diagnosed with some form of a pediatric brain tumor. This figure equates to approximately 4,200 children each year. In the fall of 2012, a two-year-old little boy named Grayson Savery became part of that statistic. This little boy is currently a third grader at New Garden Elementary School. The Grayson Saves Foundation was established by his family and friends after learning of Grayson’s diagnosis. Through this fundraiser the New Garden Elementary School community raised $465.74 for the Foundation.
Positive Messages Await Fifth Graders
What’s better than a message of encouragement first thing in the morning? On a beautiful morning, Mr. Troy Harris’ fifth grade students walked into their classroom to find a wonderful surprise – encouraging messages written on their desks. Smiles soon appeared as students began to read the messages of their peers. Classroom community is definitely being established in this classroom.
Buddies Again!
Mrs. Kimberly Hall’s and Mr. Troy Harris’ classes have once again teamed up to be buddy classes for the 2018/2019 school year. This partnership benefits each grade. For the third grade students, they get an extra hand with their work and get to know other students in the building. For the fifth grade students, they get to practice being role models for their impressionable buddies.
After School Sports with Mrs. Sweeton
New Garden Elementary School’s After School Sports Club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Mrs. Shannon Sweeton. The group plays sports and games that focus on team building, sportsmanship, and fitness. Some of the games they may play are kickball, dodge ball, and basketball. It is a great way for students to participate in physical exercise, while learning how to get along with others and meet new friends.
