The Big Brothers program is a mentoring program that introduces children to the workplace at an early age. The program allows the children to experience the corporate world and have a window into their future careers. Through these one-on-one relationships, children come to understand the educational requirements they will need to achieve success in their future professions. New Garden Elementary School has been fortunate to have partnered with Exelon Corporation over the past two years to offer amazing experiences for students.
This past year, second grade students at New Garden Elementary School were diligently studying about the environment. One of the culminating projects from this study was a fundraiser to save the rain forests. Students were asked to donate a dollar, and in turn, was allowed to wear any type of hat for the day. As you can see from the pictures, everyone had fun for a worthy cause.
The wax museum a project that New Garden Elementary School fifth grade students look forward to every year. The project, which includes a full research project on a famous person, helps prepare the students for middle school. After successfully completing the research process, each student “becomes” the famous person he or she was researching. There were a wide range of people researched, from Audrey Hepburn to Pat Tillman. Parents, guardians, family, and friends were invited to come visit on the final day of this fun project.
Every Spring, fifth grade students can’t wait for the annual Friday Night Live event. This is a time where fifth graders stay at school until 8pm. During this time they participate in group activities, have a pizza and water ice party, and end the night with a dance. The day starts off with reading laps where students head out to the lawn to read a book of their choice and then take laps around designated points. Students also received their “Class of 2024” Kennett shirt, drawstring bag with a big “K” on it, a special bookmark, and a book. Many volunteers and New Garden Elementary School staff helped to pulled together this event special.
