Fifth Grade Visits The Museum of the American Revolution
New Garden Elementary School fifth grade students took a trip to the Museum of the American Revolution recently as a culminating activity to their study of the American Revolution. According to the museum’s website, “From the early stirrings of colonial unrest in the 1760s to the decisive Patriot victory at the siege of Yorktown in 1781, the stories told throughout the Museum of the American Revolution offer a dynamic look at the nation’s founding era.” Students received a guided tour through the exhibits and each exhibit complemented their classroom study. It was the first time many of the students visited the museum and many expressed an interest to return again in the near future. Positive Messages Await Mrs. Brodie’s Students
What’s better than a message of encouragement first thing in the morning? On a beautiful morning, Mrs. Gina Brodie’s third graders walked into their classroom to find surprise messages written on their desks. Then each student left kind messages for their teacher and for each other. This year’s theme in Mrs. Gina Brodie’s third grade class is “Be Bold, Be Kind.”
Mrs. Kimberly Hall’s Class Learns About Community Helpers
Mrs. Kimberly Hall’s first grade class has just completed their social studies unit titled “Where We Live.” As a culminating activity, Mrs. Hall’s class teamed-up with their fifth grade buddies to create their favorite community helpers. The fifth graders assisted their buddies with write sentences. It was a valuable learning experience for both classes.
Ms. Skopowski’s Art Club
This year’s Art Club consists of third, fourth, and fifth grade students who have a passion for art and enjoy doing projects outside of the classroom. This fall they made paper-mâché pumpkins, clay leaf prints, and water-color spider webs. Club members even helped decorate for this year’s book fair. The club has more than 50 members, which necessitated splitting the club into two groups for double the fun!
Family Reading Night
New Garden Elementary School students in grades first through third took part in the school’s Family Night, hosted by Title I. During the evening, students and their parents were engaged in several comprehension and decoding activities. Teachers modeled the activities and shared strategies with parents to increase reading at home. Teachers, students, and parents took this opportunity to talk about reading, practice important reading skills, and build a joy for life-long literacy. Toward the end of the night, students were able to take their activities home and pick out a “just right book” with their parent(s). Family Night is an important night to our students and their families. At New Garden Elementary School we strive to meet the needs of all of our students and provide the best learning opportunities that we can. A special thanks to all the teachers, families, interpreters, and our Kennett High School volunteers for helping make this night a success for everyone!
New Garden Celebrates Superheroes Day
When there is a need, New Garden always responds. Recently, teachers, staff, and students came to school dressed as superheros for a worthy cause. Everyday 11.5 children are diagnosed with some form of a pediatric brain tumor. This figure equates to approximately 4,200 children each year. In the fall of 2012, a two-year-old little boy named Grayson Savery became part of that statistic. This little boy is currently a second grader at New Garden Elementary School. The Grayson Saves Foundation was established by his family and friends after learning of Grayson’s diagnosis. Through this fundraiser the New Garden Elementary School community raised $340 for the Foundation.
Mr. Ryan Battin’s Music Class Has Talent
Check out the creativity of New Garden Elementary School’s first and second grade students during Mr. Ryan Battin’s music class! Each class created a sound story and performed a small play during class. First, the class read “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams. Next, students added instruments to represent each character in the story. Finally, as the story is read again, the students showed off their acting and musical talents. What a fun activity!
Learning About Christopher Columbus
Mrs. Lisa McCoy’s first grade class and Mrs. Beth Decker’s fifth grade class teamed up to learn about Christopher Columbus. The students read about him, cooperatively filled out a graphic organizer with facts, wrote those facts into sentences, and finally made a three-dimensional replica of one of his ships. It was a great learning experience.
Miss Erika Smith’s Class Celebrates “GoNoodleween”
Miss Erika Smith recently received a Kennett Education Foundation grant to make New Garden Elementary School a “GoNoodle Plus” school. GoNoodleween is just the first way to celebrate our new school-wide initiative to KEEP MOVING! Miss Smith’s class celebrated “GoNoodleween” to complete their third GoNoodle Ambassador challenge. The October challenge was to celebrate GoNoodle in a fun and creative way to get students to use their imaginations and search through videos at home to come up with GoNoodle inspired costumes to bring school wide awareness to incorporating movement, mindfulness, and fun into the classroom.
